HADVC welcomes several new instructors!

Faculty members in the History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture are delighted to introduce our new online instructors and provide students with several short videos about them. With their virtual arrival, we are able to offer a number of brand-new topics! 

Daniela Montelongo hails from Mexico, and she completed an MA at the Paris Sorbonne before arriving in Canada to earn a PhD at the University of British Columbia. A photo historian with a specialization in Africa, Daniela has also taught classes on Aboriginal art at Emily Carr University. Daniela is offering UofA students the opportunity to learn about the History of Modern and Contemporary African Photography this fall in HADVC 411/511. Chun Wa Chan is a specialist in Japanese and Chinese art with a particular interest in Buddhism. He completed his PhD at the University of Michigan and has taught previously at both the University of Hong Kong and the University of Toronto. Chun Wa will teach HADVC 301 (Painting of Imperial China) in the fall and both HADVC 217 (History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture in Japan) and HADVC 311 (Contemporary Asian Art and its Diaspora) in the winter. Nikolina (Nina) Kurtovic wrote her PhD dissertation on Yugoslavian photography during the Cold War at the University of Toronto, where she has been teaching a variety of twentieth-century and contemporary topics. At the UofA, Nina will teach HADVC 256 (History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture in the Contemporary Era) in the fall and HADVC 336 (Introduction to Performance Art) in the winter. Jessica Veevers specializes in Canadian art. In addition to holding a PhD from Concordia University in art history, Jessica also earned a degree in Art Conservation at Queen’s University. Jessica will be teaching HADVC 311 (Abstract Painting in Canada) in the winter.
