Teaching Assistantships

Overview:

The Department of Anthropology hires its graduate students to perform Teaching Assistantships for undergraduate courses.

Hiring:

All Teaching Assistantships are regulated by the Graduate Student Assistantship (GSA) Collective Agreement. Teaching Assistants (TAs) should learn their rights and responsibilities as outlined in the Collective Agreement. Eligibility criteria for TAships include:

  • Maintaining superior academic performance (GPA of 3.5 or above);
  • Full-time registration for term of TA contract;
  • Possessing the appropriate knowledge background for the course.
  • If applicable, achievement of an overall rating of “Good” or higher in previous Department of Anthropology Teaching Assistantships.

All Department of Anthropology graduate students who meet the above criteria, and are not precluded from taking up a TAship by reason of holding another graduate assistantship or award restricting their hiring, are automatically considered for available TAships in the Department of Anthropology.

When a senior PhD student (i.e., advanced to candidacy) is the principal instructor of a course with one or more TAs, the TAs must be either master’s students or junior PhD students.

Evaluation of TAs:

The Teaching Assistants will be evaluated at the end of each Teaching Assistantship in accordance with the GSA Collective Agreement. The purpose of the evaluation is to provide pertinent feedback on the TA’s performance and to aid the TA in further development.

The evaluation is to be filled out by the TA Supervisor (Principal Instructor) and discussed with the TA. The TA and the TA Supervisor will both sign the evaluation. The evaluation must be submitted to the Department of Anthropology Graduate Advisor for the student’s record.
