Professional Development Requirement
Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Requirements
The GPS has mandated that all graduate students must complete a Professional Development Requirement. This requirement has two components: the Individual Development Plan (IDP) and Eight Hours of Professional Development Activities.
Individual Development Plan (IDP)
- Fill out the Comprehensive IDP Workbook. You don’t need to share the completed workbook with your supervisor or mentor.
- Step 4 in the IDP Workbook guides you to create a timeline. You must show your
completed timeline to your supervisor or mentor and have them approve it.
This must be done within 12 months of the start of the MA program, or within 18 months of the start of the PhD program.
8 Hours of Professional Development Activity
Attend at least 8 hours of Professional Development sessions.

Submitting Information to the Department
To complete the Professional Development requirements, submit the following to the Graduate Advisor at anthgrad@ualberta.ca.
- Individual Development Plan and Professional Development Completion Form, completed and signed by the student and supervisor or mentor
- Copy of your timeline.
