19 November 2024
The Department of Anthropology is proud to announce that Benjamin Kucher, a graduate student in our Master of Arts program, has been appointed as Chair of the Canadian Archaeological Association’s (CAA) Indigenous Issues Committee. A member of the Métis Nation of Alberta and a descendant of the Michel First Nation, Benjamin brings a wealth of experience in Indigenous archaeology, social justice, and community engagement to this prestigious role.
As Chair of the Indigenous Issues Committee, Benjamin will lead national efforts to address critical challenges in Canadian archaeology, including the protection of Indigenous cultural heritage, data sovereignty, and fostering reconciliation through community-based research. His leadership reflects a deep commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion within the discipline, as well as amplifying Indigenous voices in archaeological practices and policies.
Benjamin’s appointment is a testament to his dedication and the impact of his work, which has centered on Métis archaeology and cultural practices, with a focus on trade beads and their significance in Métis identity. His leadership within the CAA is expected to make meaningful contributions to the field while strengthening relationships between archaeologists and Indigenous communities.
We congratulate Benjamin on this significant achievement and look forward to seeing the important work he will accomplish in this role.
