Courses

The next intake is for Fall 2024. The program will run from Fall 2024 to Winter 2026. Courses have both synchronous and asynchronous components, including online (Zoom) class sessions. Any synchronous sessions are in Mountain Time (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). Dates and times are determined by the course instructor.

Note: you must take a course in the term for which you apply. Course offerings are dependent upon sufficient enrollment.


Fall Term I

EDU 595 Foundations in Multilingual Education ★3

The course introduces students to concepts such as second language instruction, education for minority populations, and multilingualism in education in K-12. The emphasis is on the study of major foundational research that have shaped current thinking about these topics and the implication for teaching practice.

Winter Term I

EDU 595 Integrating Language in Content Areas ★3

This course develops concepts of language in content areas across the K-12 curriculum, focusing on the Alberta K-12 English as an Additional Language Proficiency Benchmarks. Language, pedagogy and learning are explored through the research and professional literature, experiential learning, and reflection.

Fall Term II

EDU 595 Newcomers with Emerging Print Literacy ★3

The education and programs for language, literacy and numeracy instruction for students who arrive in Canada without having to learn to read and write in any language is the focus of this course. It is intended to provide practitioners and researchers with a critical overview of theoretical and practical perspectives, concepts, strategies, and issues relevant to the students.

Winter Term II

EDU 595 Culturally Responsive Language Practices ★3

We will explore some of the historical, socio-cultural and - political issues related to developing culturally relevant and responsive language curriculum, pedagogies and professional practices. Educators and professional practitioners will come away with enhanced critical thinking skills and active engagement with the issues through discussions and hands-on learning opportunities in order to move forward and be able to create more inclusive, fulfilling learning environments.
