Started in 2011, the Heroes for Health grant creates opportunities for university community members to share ideas and work together to shape healthier campuses.

Think outside the box

Heroes for Health grant favours creative, outside the box ideas that enrich the health and well-being of our university community as a whole while fostering care and empathy for one another. 

U of A community members can receive financial support for novel and innovative projects that support university well-being and promote partnerships among students, staff and faculty. 

Grants available

Community grant (up to $5,000): funds activities intended to benefit the U of A community (students, staff and faculty) — preference for projects involving student and staff partnerships.

Staff grant (up to $1,500): funds activities intended to benefit staff and faculty well-being — consideration for projects involving staff/faculty and students. 

A Heroes for Health grant can support start-up costs and help plan and implement health and well-being initiatives to benefit our university community. 


Eligibility

  • Open to all U of A students, staff, faculty or alumni — includes student groups, student faculty associations, departments or central units. 
  • Projects align with the Healthy University Strategic Plan .
  • Projects improve university health and well-being and/or promote healthy practices.

We're looking for proposals that target one or more of the following areas: 

  • Physical health, social health, mental health
    • Can also include other areas of well-being such as environmental, financial, academic and spiritual 
  • Creating safe, accessible and connected campuses
  • Fostering a student-centered learning environment
  • Relationships, connection and belonging
  • Supporting transitions into and out of study

Applications should not only address immediate health and well-being needs but also incorporate strategies that ensure long-term benefits for our community. We are looking for initiatives that can be scaled and updated to create positive change across the university.

Requirements to apply

Please note:

  • Only complete proposals will be considered for funding.  
  • Projects duplicating existing services or programs at the U of A will not receive funding. Refer to the Previous Grant Recipients for past examples.

Adjudication process

All submissions will be adjudicated by the Wellness Supports student adjudication committee and the Heroes for Health partners ( Campus and Community Recreation and Human Resources Health, Safety and Environment ).
