Faculty Travel Grants

Travel grants of up to $2,000 are available to current University of Alberta full-time faculty members/service officers & APOs. Please submit an application form for academic travel grants directly to The China Institute for consideration. Applications are generally accepted throughout the year, however, request should be submitted two months before intended travel.


Initiatives considered:

  • Travel for China study related conference presentations
  • Travel to China to meet with partner institutions to initiate a specific project or projects that could provide opportunities for University of Alberta-China cooperation, and potential funding from other sources
  • Travel to China for research collaboration on existing projects that are already being funded by other sources 

Applications must include the following:

  1. Application form
  2. Supporting statement from Chair or Dean
  3. Project/Conference description (Purpose of the visit, expected outcomes and proposed budget summary)
  4. Acceptance letter if travel for conference
  5. Dates of travel 

Terms of funding:

  1. Expenses that will be covered include:
  2. A report following the visit to be submitted to The China Institute within one month of the return travel date
  3. Travel expense claims must follow the Travel Processes and Expense Procedure (UAPPOL)
  4. Grants must be used in the fiscal year that they are approved
  5. Financial arrangement must be made within two months of the award letter, the funds may no longer be available thereafter
  6. All University of Alberta Travel Expense Reimbursement policies apply 


Review Process:

  • Faculty members will only be considered for one travel grant per year
  • All applications will be screened by The China Institute
  • The review process may take up to ten weeks
