The Board of Governors is proceeding with an independent third-party review of the university’s decision to remove the encampment on May 11. We have selected retired Court of King’s Bench of Alberta Justice Adèle Kent, KC to lead the review.
Ms. Kent is a U of A graduate with more than 45 years of legal experience, having practiced in Edmonton and Calgary before being appointed to the Bench. She has also served as Chief Judicial Officer of the National Judicial Institute, Canada, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Center for Judicial Ethics, National Center for State Courts, U.S. Justice Kent currently serves as President of the International Organization for Judicial Training.
The selection of a lead reviewer is an important next step, and we look forward to receiving the review’s results later this year. The final report will be released to the university community and made public.
Ms. Kent will begin her review immediately and will seek input from the university community throughout the summer and early fall. Here are the review's Terms of Reference.
I encourage everyone affected by the encampment and its removal to cooperate with the review. There will be no recriminations for cooperating with the review.
Sincerely,
Kate Chisholm, KC
Chair, University of Alberta Board of Governors
