GETTING INVOLVED/ AFFILIATED WITH THE OFFICE OF GLOBAL SURGERY

The Office of Global Surgery aim to uphold the highest level of integrity and ethics in the programs and initiatives that it undertakes and is currently working on. The focus is sustainability, mutual respect, impact, and transparency. We welcome new collaborations or proposals, as well as participation in existing initiatives:

  • If you are interested in proposing a new initiative at the OGS, there needs to be:
    1. Alignment with the OGS's, the department's, and the Faculty of Medicine's strategic goals, priorities and ethical mandate;
    2. Staff/faculty member(s) (not a student, resident, or volunteer) that leads the initiative and will continue to do so, and has brought the work to the OGS with a request for collaboration/assistance in order to ensure sustainability of the initiatives; and
    3. Capacity, bandwidth, resources and staffing at the OGS to take on this initiative
  • If you are looking to collaborate with the OGS, staff/faculty, learners (students and residents) and volunteers may participate in existing OGS programs by applying or sending a request and will be evaluated depending on program needs, capacity and fit.
  • In order to have or claim a formal affiliation with the OGS, there needs to be direct supervision by the OGS leadership team and a clearly defined agreement or contract as well as the accountability and reporting in place. This is to ensure sustainability, transparency, and oversight.


The office provides support to new and existing programs and initiatives in the following ways:

  1. Administrative work
    • Helping to set up paperwork for incoming or outgoing trainee exchanges
    • Set up meetings and agendas with appropriate stakeholders
  2. Project management and research development/assistance
    • Assistance in the creation of an operational plan with detailed objectives (goals) and plan to achieve objectives that can be measured
    • Ensure deliverables are being met by all participants in the set budget
    • Seek and vet vendors and equipment to meet deliverables
    • Assistance in the creation and approval of applicable applications and research tools, such as ethics approvals, surveys, and funding applications/reporting
  3. Stakeholder engagement
    • Engage with potential partners for initiative/program work in areas of low resource surgical setting
    • Validate innovative processes and technologies that fit within the needs of areas of low resource surgical setting
  4. Needs assessment and ethical framework assessment
    • Ensure that the initiative/program is set up for a sustainable and high-impact outcomes
    • Ensure that the initiative/program fits within an ethical framework by assessing the impact of the outcomes do not do harm and ways to mitigate any harm doing
  5. Promotion and marketing
    • Provide support and content for promotion where promotion provides a means to meeting a goal (i.e. promotion of milestones achieved or recruitment of participants in study).
  6. Fund Development
    • Provide support for fund development through various sources (i.e. foundations, funding applications, etc.).
