Internal Peer Review

Get Help with your SSHRC Insight Grant Application

Are you applying for a SSHRC Insight Grant this fall? Would you like some help to improve your application?

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities is pleased to offer faculty members the possibility of a pre-submission internal peer review, to complement the services provided by the Research Partner Network within the VPRI portfolio.

A panel of volunteer peer reviewers has been established to harness the expertise that exists in the Faculties of Arts, Education and Law, and in the Alberta School of Business, for the benefit of all University of Alberta colleagues applying for a SSHRC Insight Grant or a SSHRC Insight Development Grant. Participation is voluntary, but past experience shows that pre-submission feedback from an insightful reader, including from one not within your research field or academic unit, helps greatly to improve an applicant's chances of competition success.

Many members of the CSSH Panel of Peer Reviewers are senior colleagues with prior experience on SSHRC adjudication committees. All have been nominated to the panel by the Faculty ADRs. (If you’d like to serve as a peer reviewer, please get in touch.)

If you’d like an experienced peer reviewer to provide feedback on your SSHRC Insight Grant application, register for an experienced peer reviewer. We’ll try to match applications with peer reviewers up to August 15. You will need to have a high-quality, penultimate version of the application, formatted as a single pdf, to provide the peer reviewer. Please be kind to our volunteers. Provide your draft application as soon as you can, and well before August 22.

Here are the dates you need to know (all times are noon on the date listed):

  • June 17: Portal for applicants to register for SSHRC Insight Grant - Peer review opens
  • June 18 to August 15: We’ll start matching applicants with reviewers as soon as possible, and do the last matching's on August 15.
  • August 22: Deadline for providing a complete draft application to the peer reviewer.
  • September 5: Date by which the peer reviewer will return feedback to the applicant.
  • *September 11: *Date applications should normally be sent to Faculty ADR.
  • September 18: Date your application must be at RAS for institutional compliance review and sign-off.

*Please note that your Faculty ADR might need to adjust this date slightly.
