Elizabeth Thomas

Master of Science, Rehabilitation Medicine

Elizabeth worked in the field of mental health rehabilitation in India. Amazed by the resilience of people experiencing mental health challenges, she decided to study further to improve her research skills to better understand their needs and empower them.

In fact, her research participants came to support her in her thesis defense, where they shared their positive experiences during their research together. "We created a sustainable peer-support network during our research, which continues to work towards empowering people with mental health challenges," says Elizabeth.

Elizabeth's advice for prospective students:
"I would recommend that you engage the people who you are researching about in your research project. Their lived experience will ensure that your research is relevant to them.

I also recommend talking about your research to people from a range of different professions. There is no place like the U of A to collaborate with people from a range of fields and innovate together."

Elizabeth is currently working as a research associate, working on publishing her thesis and presenting it at international conferences, to build awareness about mental health challenges and to become part of the solution.
