Precision Health Seed Funds Awards

This competitive seed grant program aimed to leverage innovation and advance pan-faculty research at the University of Alberta. It supported multidisciplinary teams to develop new research directions and pilot studies in preparation for larger-scale, longer-term projects to be funded by external sources in the following thematic areas:
- Artificial Intelligence in Health
- Precision Diagnostics
- Precision Therapeutics
- Precision Public Health
Funding was granted for five awards valued at $20,000 each (non-renewable).

Precision Health Innovator Award
Internal award, Precision Health Signature Area
Description
The University of Alberta Precision Health Innovator Award honors faculty who have made important contributions to society by developing novel ideas and insights through their precision health related research. Precision Health (PH) is an emerging approach to health and wellness that expands on efforts to diagnose and treat disease through advances in technology, data and analytics. It comprises various activities from the promotion of health and wellness and the prevention of disease, to customized treatment strategies, and grouping of populations to determine the best care by targeting genetic, biological, environmental, and social and behavioral determinants of health.
The Award was established by the University of Alberta’s Precision Health Signature Area (PHSA) Steering Committee.
Submission Instructions
Any faculty member of the University of Alberta is eligible to submit a nomination, please provide:
- Candidate’s name, title, department, career stage, email, and phone number
- Description of the activities the individual has taken to promote research, technologies or activities that support precision health innovations (max. 1 page)
- Candidate’s CV (max. 3 pages)
Nominee Eligibility
Early-, mid-career or senior investigator at the University of Alberta
Award Amount
A total of 3 awards are available:
- $40,000: early-career investigator (assumed faculty appointment within 5 years)
- $40,000: mid-career investigator (assumed faculty appointment 5-15 years ago)
- $40,000: senior investigator (assumed faculty appointment >15 years ago)
The awards are open to investigators at the entire University of Alberta and are to be used over a two-year period of time for the recipient’s precision health related research projects conducted at the university.
Criteria
The Precision Health Innovator will have accomplished one or more of the following:
- Developed or contributed to a novel idea, process, or technology related to precision health and demonstrated its translational potential relative to an otherwise conventionally accepted or non-existent practice or procedure
- Taken a significant innovation to market-readiness e.g., through a partnership or other relationship with a commercial enterprise, licensing a patent, or by starting a company

Selection Committee
The award selection committee will be composed of the voting members and chair of the PHSA Steering Committee.
The Precision Health Innovator Award recognizes successful efforts by faculty (assistant, associate or full professors) in innovation and/or entrepreneurship related to precision health.
Announcement of Award
The award recipients will be contacted by the Academic Lead, PHSA, and will be announced in mid - March.
Records from this nomination will be managed in accordance with the Alberta Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The project holder must comply with university policies and procedures.
