Echocardiography Clinical Research Fellowship

Overview

The Stollery Children's Hospital is the main referral site for congenital cardiac surgery throughout most of Western Canada and also the referral site through the Fetal and Neonatal Cardiology Program for high risk pregnancies with a fetus with suspected congenital or acquired heart disease from within Alberta and from other Western provinces. The Stollery Children's Echocardiography Laboratory currently performs over 12,000 pediatric and 1,800 fetal echocardiograms annually. In addition to standard 2D, M-mode and Doppler assessments of congenital and acquired pediatric heart disease, the laboratory employs state-of-the-art technologies including tissue Doppler and speckle tracking for myocardial function assessments and 3D imaging on a daily basis.

Clinical training experience

During rotations through the echocardiography laboratory at Stollery Children's Hospital the fellow will:

  • gain experience in clinical transthoracic, transesophageal and three-dimensional echocardiography, providing service to outpatients, inpatients, operating rooms, and cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology laboratories
  • develop expertise in on- and off-line myocardial function analyses
  • have an opportunity to rotate through the Royal Alexandra Hospital Fetal and Neonatal Cardiology program, to gain experience and training in fetal echocardiography
  • be expected to participate in weekly cardio-surgical rounds including presentation of salient echo findings for surgical and medical case discussions

Research experience

All fellows are expected to participate in at least one to two research initiatives per year of training under the supervision of faculty. The fellows gain experience in generating a research proposal(s) with hypothesis driven objectives, documentation of knowledge gaps in the field, and use of appropriate methodology. The research outcomes are presented locally and should culminate in one or more abstract presentations at national and/or international scientific conferences and one or more peer-reviewed publication.

This position is aimed at providing the candidate with training in all areas of pediatric echocardiography such that they can function independently as a pediatric echocardiogapher in their future position of employment. The position provides a combination of clinical echocardiographic training, academic activities and teaching.

Teaching experience

All fellows are expected to participate in formal and informal teaching sessions for the pediatric cardiology trainees and other pediatric cardiology subspecialty fellows including weekly echo teaching sessions for sonographers and trainees, weekly fetal cardiac rounds and core cardiology curriculum teaching sessions.
