A Welcome Message

The Dean's Office shares a message of welcome for new and returning nursing students this fall semester

5 September 2019

A warm welcome to our first year nursing students and welcome back to our returning students! We are proud to have such outstanding additions to the University of Alberta Faculty of Nursing, and we are excited that you are now part of our rich history.

The University of Alberta Faculty of Nursing is a pioneer in our profession, with over a hundred years' history of excellence. In 1982, with the establishment of the Alberta Foundation for Nursing Research, Alberta became the first province or state in the western world to earmark funds explicitly for nursing research. Our faculty are globally renowned for their teaching, research, leadership, and practice expertise. You are the benefactors of world-class learning opportunities by the architects of nursing research in North America.

According to The 2019 Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities by subject, our faculty currently ranks #29 worldwide (12 spots ahead of Harvard!), and #2 in Canada. We are incredibly proud of our graduates who now practice and lead in various clinical, educational, global, and policy settings and continue to deliver the highest standard of care to the communities in which they serve, including ten alumni who have been awarded the Order of Canada for their outstanding service and lifelong contributions. These graduates once stood where you stand now.

Nursing is a deeply rewarding profession filled with endless opportunities, and the University of Alberta Faculty of Nursing is your key to a limitless future. Your time here will open doors across the globe and unlock leadership opportunities at every level.

We know you will continue to answer the call to do great things, to lead, to discover, and to change the course of our world. We are so proud to welcome you to the University of Alberta Faculty of Nursing legacy.

Sincerely,

Greta Cummings RN PhD, Dean, Olive Yonge RN PhD, Vice Dean, & Diane Kunyk RN PhD, Vice Dean
