Jaimie Braybrook is graduating from the dental hygiene diploma program and is planning to take her career further in the fall.
What advice would you give to new students?
Get involved! When you're a student, participating in school events or volunteering often seems like something that gets pushed to the bottom of your to-do list, but there are so many opportunities that you might not have access to once you're done school, so take advantage of them.
What was your most memorable UAlberta experience?
My most memorable U of A experience was representing the school at Rugby 7s Nationals this year. We ended up placing third but we made huge progress throughout the season and I am so proud to be part of the University of Alberta's athletic program.
Who was your mentor or favourite professor?
All my professors were so amazing and supportive of me trying to do rugby and research-and everything else I could think of-while also working my way through the dental hygiene program. It's hard to pick just one, but professor Alexandra Sheppard was always there to help me organize my school and rugby schedule, as well as answer the many, many, many questions I asked. She showed me so much support throughout the program and was very understanding when I came to her with any issues. She was the professor I turned to for advice when I was struggling with my workload and she was the one I came to when I was excited about my accomplishments, because she was always so excited to see her students succeeding. I don't know how I would have gotten through the program without her help.
What's next for you?
I'll be returning to the U of A to complete the degree program, specializing in community dental hygiene. After that, I'll be saving up some money so that I can complete my master's, and then from there… who knows?!
