Professor emeritus Anne Fanning Binder (Infectious Diseases) was recognized at the City of Edmonton Salute to Excellence Hall of Fame on June 12 at the Winspear Centre.
Joel Weiner (Biochemistry) was awarded the Friends of CIHR Cy Frank Distinguished Service Award.

Kathryn Dong (Emergency Medicine) was awarded the Dr. Alan Drummond Advocacy Award by the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians (CAEP) for her ongoing efforts with the Addictions Recovery and Community Health team in Edmonton.
The Spinal Cord Injury Treatment Centre Society(SCITCS) earned the Mayor's Award in the Outstanding Service category. The award was received by co-founder Louise Miller. The Mayor's Awards are presented yearly by the City of Edmonton's Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) to honour contributions towards accessibility and inclusivity in the city.
Michael James (Biochemistry) was honoured for his esteemed 50-year career with our Faculty on June 15. James is credited with founding the first laboratory in Canada dedicated to the study of proteins by crystallography, a technique used to determine the structure of a protein in order to understand how it functions. Sarah Burton-MacLeod (Palliative Care) received an Excellence in Teaching award from the Grey Nuns Medical Staff Association on May 26.

Tyler Verhaeghe has earned the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education Award of Excellence and Innovation in the Integration of Technology, for his iBook Complete Denture Prosthodontics. Read the story.
Seema Ganatra, Tania Doblanko, John Valentine, Kari Rassmusen and Patrick von Hauff received the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education award in Instructional Design for their student-centred seminar, Active Case Based Learning in Oral Pathology: The confluence of multiple teaching and learning techniques. Graduate student Humam Saltaji was awarded the 2016 Dent Star Graduate Prize.
Cecilia Ponce Garcia, Orthodontic resident, is the recipient of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) 2017 Summer Student Employment Award for her multimedia lecture materials and app for DENT 530: Orthodontic.

Michael Laffin (Surgery resident) receives a Vanier Canada CIHR Graduate Scholarship for his work on "The Genetics, Microbiology, and Immunology of Post-Operative Crohn's Disease."
Megan Beggs (Physiology) receives a Vanier NSERC Graduate Scholarship for her work on "Molecular mechanisms mediating a positive calcium balance during development."
Elisabeth (Beth) Richardson (Cell Biology) is honoured with a Vanier NSERC Graduate Scholarship for her work on "Roseobacticide-mediated programmed cell death in Emiliania huxleyi."
FoMD grad students showcased their skills at the Canadian Student Health Research Forum in Winnipeg (June 7-9). Lacey Haddon won the CIHR Silver award for Women's Health, and Antonio Bruni received best poster award
Timothy Gutteridge (Palliative Care resident) earned Best Resident Research prize and Best Poster prize at the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians annual conference (Edmonton, June 1-3), making supervisors Vickie Baracos, Yoko Tarumi and Robin Fainsinger proud.
Rashmi Panigrahi (Biochemistry) won a travel award to the Biophysical Society of Canada Annual Meeting in May 2017 in Montréal.
Michael Bildersheim (MD/ MBA student) placed second in the Warwick Business School 2017 Case Challenge on sepsis.
Danielle Thiel (MD Class of 2020) won first place in the Saskatchewan Half-Marathon in May. Well done!
Convocation Awards
Congratulations to all the FoMD graduates who convocated in June. The following students earned top honours for their outstanding performance:
Lindsay Orser(DDS program) earned the 2017 Alberta Premier's Silver Medal. The medal is awarded to the student with the highest overall performance within medicine, dentistry, law and pharmacy. Read the story.
Ryan Reid (MD Program) received two top awards. The Dr. F. Lloyd Roberts Scholarship for outstanding academic merit, which is deemed to be the most outstanding graduating student in the MD program in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. He also received the Moshier Memorial Gold Medal for outstanding merit in all studies.
David Chapman (MD program) received the The John W. Scott Honor Award for his demonstration of demonstrated qualities of scholarship, leadership and character.

Chelsea Martin (MLS program) received the H.B. Collier Memorial Gold Medal for her superior academic achievement.
Sara Sy (MLS program) received the University of Alberta Hospital Laboratory Medicine & Pathology Staff Scholarship for graduating with distinction.
Christine Granley (MLS program) received the Barbara Motyl Award for her superior academic achievement and proficiency and extra-curricular activities.

The E.N. Skakun Award for Service to Education recognizes major and long-term contribution to the educational leadership and scholarship in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.
The David Cook Award is presented to a faculty member (or a group of members) of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry who has successfully planned and implemented a significant curricular innovation.
