On the 25th anniversary of the Vriend v. Alberta decision, alumnus Douglas R Stollery, CM, KC, shared the story of the first successful gay rights case before the Supreme Court of Canada.
The lunch-hour talk was hosted by the University of Alberta Faculty of Law and OUTLaw.
The landmark case led to the amendment of Alberta’s human rights legislation to include sexual orientation as a protected class. A highlight of Stollery’s career includes pro bono work on this human rights case, widely recognized as one of the Top 10 Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms decisions.
