After serving in the Canadian Armed Forces and studying political science for three years at the U of A, Andrew Sawyers, ‘24 JD, knew he wanted to pursue a different path.

"I wasn't fully satisfied with my career and was open to exploring new possibilities, but I hadn't yet figured out what direction to take,” he says.

Sawyers encountered unexpected inspiration for a new path through an experience close to home. This experience ultimately motivated him to pursue studies in the Faculty of Law's juris doctor program.

"A couple of years ago, my mom suffered a serious injury and had to file a claim," he says. "Seeing the direct, positive impact a compassionate and diligent lawyer can have on people's lives during that challenging time, in part, inspired me to pursue a career in law.”

Upon entering the program, it quickly became evident to Sawyers that law was the perfect fit, as he excelled in his studies. This was further confirmed when he was recognized as the 2024 recipient of the Judges' Bronze Medal – awarded annually to the convocating student who stands third throughout their studies in the JD program.

“I was fairly surprised to learn that I received this honour. I knew I had a good GPA but I didn’t expect it,” says Sawyers of this recognition.

When reflecting on his time in the program, Sawyers says he received extensive support and motivation from a variety of individuals, including his parents, friends and acquaintances, both within and outside the faculty. However, the most enduring source of encouragement came from his partner, who, he says, kept him grounded and motivated throughout his endeavors. Sawyers also found comfort in his cat, Hank, who was there for him during both the highs and lows of his studies.

Sawyers is currently articling with MLT Aikins. He is grateful and excited for this experience and remains receptive to the potential inspiration it could provide for shaping his future career.

"In my legal career, my biggest aspiration is to make a positive impact on people's lives through compassionate and empathetic service. I look forward to embracing this current opportunity and all opportunities in the future that will enable me to fulfill this goal."
