The Physical Activity and Diabetes Lab at the University of Alberta is looking for participants with Type 2 diabetes who:

  • are 18 to 40 years old
  • had a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes in the previous three months to six years
  • have HbA1c from 6.0% to 10%
  • have excess weight, but weight stable over the previous six months
  • are able to take part in structured exercise for 24 weeks
  • are willing to participate in a low-energy diet that requires abstinence from alcohol

Type 2 diabetes is becoming more common in adults aged 18 to 45 years. Past studies have shown that, in some people, low-calorie diets can bring blood sugars down to normal levels, without the use of blood-sugar medication. This is called “reversing diabetes.” Exercise, such as walking and weightlifting, could further improve blood sugars and heart function.

This study will look at whether a low-calorie diet and exercise can reverse diabetes while also improving heart function.

The researchers are in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation at the University of Alberta. Jordan Rees is a PhD student working under Dr. Normand Boulé, both of whom are involved with the study.
