Debbie OkusanyaDebbie Okusanya was drawn to a degree in kinesiology because it aligned so well with her deep interests in anatomy and physiology as well as sport, health and wellness. Now that she is graduating, she is excited to pursue further education and training as she heads off to medical school at the University of Calgary.

We spoke to Okusanya about her favourite moments here at the University of Alberta and her advice for incoming students.

How did you know this faculty would be the right fit for you?

In high school, I was able to explore my varying interests through sports medicine courses, and I knew that kinesiology would be a great fit for me as it allowed me to explore many of my interests. I chose the University of Alberta because of the immense scholarship opportunities, amazing faculty and interesting research programs!

What are you most proud of from your time in the program?

I am most proud of my involvement in neurorehabilitation research. I was fortunate to receive a research award and also had the opportunity to attend a conference in Toronto alongside an amazing lab. Being involved in research has allowed me to receive amazing mentorship, participate in meaningful research and form long-lasting relationships with brilliant people.

How did you stay motivated and who helped you keep going when things got tough?

I stayed motivated by always having something to look forward to. Whether it was a concert or activities with friends, having something fun planned helped me achieve balance and persevere when I was overwhelmed.

What advice would you give to a student thinking of entering this program?

There are so many opportunities available to students to explore their many interests and grow as a student, professional, and as an individual. Don’t be afraid to choose your own adventure and take advantage of these opportunities to create an experience that is meaningful to you!
