The excitement of starting fresh as a new semester approaches is often accompanied by a sense of uncertainty. Entering a new environment, especially a large university campus, can be overwhelming. From my experience, I have found that the annual Fall Clubs Fair, which happened last week from September 3-5 on the North Campus Main Quad, was one of the best ways to ease into this new chapter. It wasn't just an event for discovering what the U of A has to offer – it was an incredible opportunity to build connections with like-minded students and begin shaping my university experience.
Here are some of the highlights from my visit.
One of the first things that struck me about the Clubs Fair was the sheer variety of options available. Whether you're interested in a club related to your major, a hobby or a cause you care about, this fair has something for everyone. Joining student organizations is a fantastic way to meet people who share your passions.
During my first visit to the Clubs Fair, I was drawn to organizations that aligned with my academic interests. As a student pursuing a double major in English and history, I discovered the History, Classics, and Religion Undergraduate Society (HCRUS), which organizes events throughout the semester, such as film screenings, activity nights and info sessions, allowing me the opportunity to not only be involved on campus but also interact with individuals in my program.
Attending the Clubs Fair was eye-opening. In addition to academically oriented groups, I was pleasantly surprised to find organizations that catered to my other interests, such as volunteerism and athleticism. The variety of clubs available opened my eyes to the multitude of ways I could connect with others who shared my enthusiasm, not just for my studies but for a wide range of activities. Whether you're passionate about athletics or committed to supporting a meaningful cause, there is a club that focuses on your interests. Reaching out to a club to learn more can be incredibly helpful, especially if you're unsure about what a particular club entails or how much of a time commitment it might require.
If you're looking for an athletic club, I found the U of A's Dance Club and Rowing Club really interesting. Since I was young, I have always been interested in dancing as it's a fun and athletic way to spend my spare time. Discovering that the U of A offers a dance club was exciting, as I hadn't realized such a club existed! The Rowing Club stood out as a fantastic team activity, blending physical fitness with the opportunity to meet new people.
As an English major, another club that caught my attention was the U of A's Tolkien Society. If you are passionate about J.R.R. Tolkien's works - whether The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit or just a deep love of literature (like me), this club is perfect for you. What makes it special is how it creates an opportunity for people to connect, discuss and share their appreciation for storytelling, themes and the expansive lore of Middle-earth. I found it to be such a unique club and something that I had not seen at the U of A before.
The Fall Clubs Fair was a unique opportunity to immerse myself in campus culture, explore a wide range of interests and build my network of friends and peers.
Whether you're looking to enhance your academic experience, discover new passions or simply meet people who share your enthusiasm, joining a club is the perfect starting point. It's a great first step toward making the most of your time at the U of A and finding your place in the campus community. You're not just joining clubs; you're opening the door to new friendships, experiences and opportunities that will shape your university journey.
