INT D 325 (3c) Memoryscape Berlin: Remembering (and Forgetting) the Holocaust in its Aftermath

What are you doing next summer? Interested in spending time in Berlin, getting to know the city, and learning about how Germany remembers the Holocaust and the Nazi past?

The academic course will examine the concentration of memorials and historical sites in the city of Berlin to explore its memoryscape as it builds (and obscures) its material relationship to its Nazi past. Given Berlin's central location in Europe, its status as a world city, and in light of the globalization of the Holocaust as lingua franca for other atrocities, the course will also examine other genocides and state sponsored violence that have occurred throughout Germany's history. Through site visits, reading of texts, and discussions with local experts, students will gain a greater understanding of how Germany and Berlin engages with its traumatic past to animate its present and the people who live there.
