In the wake of a string of sexual assaults in the city's south side, Professor Lise Gotell talks to the media. In interviews with CBC radio and television, Dr. Gotell has highlighted the similarities between the police response in Edmonton and the well known Toronto case, Jane Doe. V. Metropolitan Toronto Police. As she argues, women need specific warnings to enable them to make informed choices to increase their safety. Vague warnings, such as the one recently issued in Edmonton, counseling women living alone to lock their doors and windows, constrain women's behaviors and movements and encourage the view that it is women's responsiblity to prevent rape through vigilance.
