Stewardship
University Health Centre
The University Health Centre offers medical services to all staff, students and family members of students. The centre is welcoming to all and provides family physicians, sexual health services, transgender healthcare, mental health support, nutrition consultations and more. Services are available online and in person.
Sexual Assault Centre
The University of Alberta Sexual Assault Centre provides drop-in crisis intervention support to survivors of sexual violence and their supporters, as well as comprehensive educational workshops for the campus community. All services are free and are available to people of all genders, sexualities and backgrounds.
Heroes for Health
The Heroes for Health grant provides up to $5,000 to support staff, students and faculty who contribute to a culture of wellness at the University of Alberta. Recipients have promoted social connections, provided mental health workshops, offered students healthy snacks and set up spaces for students to destress.
The Landing
The Landing is a Students’ Union service offering support for gender and sexual diversity. The service runs a drop-in space in the Students’ Union Building for community-building activities, one-on-one support, mentorship, referrals, access to a resource library and advocacy for the safety and acceptance of LGBTQ2S+ individuals.
Mental Health Supports for Students and Staff
The University of Alberta provides students and staff access to mental health supports.
Mental Health Supports for Students include community supports, peer support programs and mental wellness programs. WellTrack is a free online self-help program available to all University of Alberta students who want to learn more about coping with stress, anxiety and depression.
Mental Health Supports for Staff include the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP), which offers a wide range of professional mental health counselling and family mediation services.
Outreach
The Steadward Centre for Personal & Physical Achievement
The Steadward Centre actively supports inclusion and independence for children, youth and adults living with impairments through programming, knowledge-sharing, research, education and collaboration with local, national and international organizations. The centre serves more than 1,000 children and adults annually and trains more than 250 students. In 2016, the centre moved into a 17,000 ft2 dedicated facility that includes a multi-purpose fitness studio, children’s activity room and an assessment room.
Outreach Programs Related to Health and Well-being for Local Communities, Disadvantaged People, or Displaced or Refugee Communities
CHANGE Health Alberta
CHANGE Health Alberta is a community-based program, housed out of the University of Alberta, working to create a new model of health service delivery that supports preventive, personalized and community-relevant care to Albertans.
Refugee Welcome Program
Dozens of students from conflict-affected countries in the Middle East and Africa have received the David Turpin and Suromitra Sanatani Award for Refugees and Displaced Persons, which was established in 2015. One student annually is also supported through a fee paid by UAlberta undergraduate students to the Students’ Union. The refugee students are all selected by the World University Services of Canada (WUSC) and receive a tuition waiver, as well as an annual living allowance. University of Alberta International coordinates a volunteer program to welcome the refugee students to Canada and the university.
Community Recreation: Access
The University of Alberta, through its Campus & Community Recreation program, provides facilities and activities to enhance the experiences of students, staff and community members.
Students, staff and community members can train alongside an accredited guide, learn how to dance ballet or just swim a few laps Certain programs are aimed at giving specific populations access to facilities and programs for free. The University of Alberta works with KidsSport Edmonton to provide children from disadvantaged families opportunities to enter our programs. We also work with the Edmonton community foundation to support a camps program, and we collaborate with USchool to support sport and recreation activities for children from designated schools.
USchool
USchool is a program run by the University of Alberta Senate that aims to introduce and connect students in grades 4-9 from socially vulnerable, Indigenous (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) and rural communities to the University of Alberta. Classes, accompanied by their classroom teachers, attend a week-long immersion experience on campus led by our USchool staff team. The week's schedule is built around the teacher's application, the Alberta curriculum and the many opportunities available at the University of Alberta.

Research
Global Health Initiative
The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry’s Global Health Office strengthens medical education and research in global health. The office has bilateral partnerships with institutions in Ghana, Uganda, Nepal, Ethiopia, Kenya, China and the Philippines. University of Alberta students and residents are able to volunteer in middle and low-income countries, while faculty and physicians are invited to the University of Alberta for research and knowledge dissemination.
The Coming Together Project
A partnership between the University of Alberta Faculty of Nursing and the University of Ghana School of Nursing, the Coming Together Project supports future nursing leaders with the knowledge and leadership skills needed to address significant maternal newborn-child health issues in Ghana.

The University of Alberta uses many different avenues to provide students and staff with access to mental health support.
🔗 U of A dentistry school partners with Métis Nation of Alberta to improve access to oral health care
A partnership with the Métis Nation of Alberta gives its 46,000 members access to affordable and high-quality pediatric, emergency, denture and other dental services carried out under faculty supervision by University of Alberta students who are training to become dentists and dental hygienists. Students learn about Métis culture while serving people who may have avoided the dentist due to cost, distance or fear.
