Tell us a bit about yourself! How does your background connect to sustainable development and the SDGs?

I’ve spent many years teaching business courses at MacEwan University, but my journey into sustainable development began when a colleague suggested revamping a business class with a sustainability focus. That idea inspired me to dive deeper, leading me to take sustainability-focused courses at Mount Royal University and Royal Roads University, where I explored the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sustainability principles, and social enterprise models.

Beyond academics, sustainability is also how I live my life. I try to align my personal habits—walking everywhere, thrifting, recycling, composting, gardening, and continuous learning—with my values of creating a more sustainable future. This combination of professional and personal commitment shapes how I approach teaching and engaging with students.

What’s one key takeaway or perspective from your experience that you hope to share with students in SUST 202?

The key message I want to share is that everyone has the power to make a difference—no matter how small the action, it counts. Living in alignment with your values is one of the most impactful ways to navigate the world and drive meaningful change.

How will students benefit from the diverse topics covered in this course?

Students will gain a deeper understanding of how we’ve arrived at our current challenges related to the SDGs and how these goals affect their daily lives. They’ll explore the interconnected nature of the SDGs, recognizing that solutions often overlap across social, environmental, and economic systems.
This course emphasizes real-world application, highlighting how the SDGs are being addressed locally and their tangible impacts on our communities. It’s about translating global goals into actionable insights that are relevant to students’ lives and careers.

What role will student participation and collaboration play in shaping the discussions in SUST 202?

Student participation will be central to shaping the learning experience in this course. Each student brings unique insights, experiences, and knowledge that can enrich our discussions and help everyone—myself included—see issues from new perspectives.

Daily interactions will encourage open dialogue, where students are prompted to share their ideas, challenge assumptions, and collaborate with one another. The goal is to create a vibrant, inclusive environment where every voice is valued, and equity and respect are at the core of our discussions. This collaborative approach will not only deepen understanding but also prepare students to engage meaningfully in diverse real-world settings.
