Division of the Month - Orthpaedic Surgery

The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery’s research has positively impacted the practice of Orthopaedic Surgery in Edmonton and throughout the world and we are at the leading edge in many areas.

27 July 2024

The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery is comprised of 56 surgeons, 4 fellows, 17 residents and 2 administrative assistants (Sonia Silva Maciel and Jennifer Callan). Research is a significant component of our academic mission. Dr. Nadr Jomha is the Director of Orthopaedic Research while Dr. Lauren Beaupre is the lead for clinical research and Dr. Adetola Adesida is the lead for fundamental science research.  It is mandatory for our residents to be involved with at least three different research projects during their residency.

Orthopaedic research at the University of Alberta is diverse and our work falls into the following categories: Arthroplasty, Fundamental Science (cryopreservation, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and biomechanics), Upper Extremity, Spine, Soft Tissue Knee Injuries, Paediatrics, Foot and Ankle and Trauma. Each year we publish an annual review that highlights all our research.

Orthopaedic research is extremely collaborative and requires input from many areas. In the past year, 32 of our surgeons have engaged in research activities. We collaborate closely with many different divisions/departments such as Surgical Research, Diagnostic Imaging, Medicine as well as faculties such as Rehabilitation Medicine, Chemical, Civil and Mechanical Engineering. We are proud to say that our research has positively impacted the practice of Orthopaedic Surgery in Edmonton and throughout the world and we are at the leading edge in many areas as can be seen in our annual review.
