Breast Cancer
23 October 2024
Dr. Joanna Ryan has now completed residency and is in her fellowship program in Ontario and has just had her manuscript submitted and accepted by the Canadian Journal of surgery, looking at the rate of revisional surgery after breast conserving surgery for Invasive breast cancer. This study shows that our surgical margin revision rates have halved since the publication of international guidelines from over 20% to around 11%. This reduces the number of returns to the operating room and reduces the amount of unnecessary surgery for breast cancer patients.
Dr. Ryerson Seguin is looking at quality of life outcomes after complex Oncoplastic Breast Surgery. This will hopefully show that patients undergoing breast conserving surgery for tumours that would otherwise have mandated a mastectomy have just as good, if not better, quality life outcomes as their counterparts who undergo breast conserving surgery.
Dr Peiris, in his role as Chief of Surgery at the Cross Cancer Institute (CCI), has been working with the multidisciplinary team to increase the operating capacity to two full rooms at the CCI. Furthermore, the radiology, pathology and surgical teams are currently working towards the implementation of magnetic seed localization. This would lead to equitable breast cancer care across the province of Alberta.
To increase breast cancer and breast health awareness, multidisciplinary educational evenings are being conducted with the Edmonton breast cancer surgical practitioners in combination with the community radiology groups. These information evenings are essential in knowledge translation for breast cancer care.
ABSO is currently recruiting for a full time oncoplastic breast surgical oncologist.
ABSO conducts clinical research and any interested residents and medical students should reach out to the group directly.
