Presenter: Dr. Doris Kieser In June 2016, federal legislation in Canada made Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) an option for patients seeking aid to end their lives. In response, the healthcare and ethics communities have engaged in robust dialogue about how best both to enact the legislation and protect healthcare workers disinclined to participate in such treatment. In particular, the Catholic healthcare community nation-wide has endorsed conscientious objection for both individuals and institutions that find the practice morally objectionable. In this presentation, she will explore what she believes are some underlying issues regarding current Western social perceptions of death that lead to difficulties in finding resolution regarding MAID and its practice. Dr. Doris Kieser is an Associate Professor at St. Joseph's College. Her area of focus includes sexuality ethics, feminist ethics & theology, bioethics, moral theology, teaching sexuality and theology, theological anthropology and the sexual body.
