Metabolic Program
The metabolic clinic at the 108 Street Mental Health building and the University of Alberta offers inter-professional healthcare service to individuals with mental illness and it’s associated metabolic problems. The program provides specialized care and help with managing the physical health issues, including obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol associated particularly with antipsychotic medication. The Metabolic Clinic is a patient-focused program with emphasis on long-term lifestyle changes and cardiovascular risk management.
Role of the Metabolic Clinic include:
- Health assessment at onset of Antipsychotic medications
- Diagnosis, planning and referral as appropriate
- Healthy lifestyle education and promotion
- Chronic disease management including medication Management
- Identification and modification of other disease risk factors
The Metabolic Program presents a great avenue for Psychiatry residents and Medical students to learn about the metabolic aspects of mental health care, the disease components and management options.
