Farewell Message from Dr. Aya Fujiwara, Director

My term as the Director of the Prince Takamado Japan Centre for Teaching and Research comes to an end on 30 June 2023. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who helped me over the past eight years. First and foremost, I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado for her support and guidance. Working under her direction was a great honour, and this invaluable experience will be my lifetime asset. I am also grateful for the donors and advisors in Canada and Japan who supported our activities and gave me critical advice. My sincere appreciation also goes to successive Canadian and Japanese ambassadors and Consul-Generals of Japan in Calgary, without whom the PTJC would not have been a thriving centre. So many stakeholders in universities, governments, and industries, not all of whom can be named, helped me build our PTJC community.

Finally, my home Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta has always endorsed my initiatives and activities. Special thanks go to two former and current Deans, Lesley Cormack and Robert Wood, for giving me the fantastic opportunity to run this centre. The PTJC, situated in the transnational space between Japan and Canada, was where I could personally and professionally relate with commitment and passion as a Japanese immigrant to Canada, mother of Japanese Canadians, and a historian of both countries. For me, it was more than a workplace.

One of the most memorable occasions was the visit of Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado to Canada and the University of Alberta on the 90^th anniversary of Japan-Canada diplomatic relations in 2019. On this occasion, we were honoured to host her insightful and inspiring lecture, “Netsuke and the Role They Played in Introducing Japan to the West.”

I was fortunate to be involved in various research projects and student programs during my term as director. By co-hosting many conferences, including the ones by the three largest Japan-related associations in Canada – the Japan Studies Association of Canada, the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education and the Replaying Japan: The International Japan Game Studies Conference -- I encountered many wonderful researchers in Japan and Canada. In 2022, I joined the 2.49-million Past Wrongs, Future Choices project, funded by the SSHRC Partnership Grant and led by Professor Jordan Stanger-Ross, University of Victoria. This multi-year international project will continue to examine racist policies against Japanese people during World War II. Following the significant mandate of the Prince Takamado Japan-Canada Memorial Fund – the promotion of student mobility between Japan and Canada – I met many incredibly talented students from all over Japan and Canada at our annual Japan-Canada Academic Consortium Student Forum in which I was involved as an organizer from 2016 and at the annual Japanese Speech Contest.

I hope the PTJC will continue to expand, honouring Prince Takamado’s legacy to cherish Japan-Canada ties and keeping its commitment to our PTJC community. I appreciate your continued support for the centre.

この度、６月３０日を持ちまして、高円宮センター所長を退任することになりました。８年間に渡り、高円宮妃殿下には、多大のご指導ご鞭撻を賜るという光栄に浴し、この経験は、私の生涯の財産です。また、センター活動を応援し、日頃より色んな助言を下さった日加両国のドナーやアドバイザーの方々には心より御礼申し上げます。歴代にわたり、在カナダ日本国大使、カルガリー日本国総領事には、一方ならぬご支援を賜り、センターの活動を共に盛り上げて頂きました。そして多くの大学、政府、企業などの関係者の方々の支えで高円宮センターのコミュニティーを築くことができました。最後に、当アルバータ大学アーツ学部は、常に私の活動を後押してくれました。特に、センター長としてこの機会を与えて下さったレスリー・コーマック元学部長、ロバート・ウッド現学部長には感謝しています。高円宮センターは、カナダ・日本両国の間に位置し、日本からカナダに移住し、日系カナダ人の母となり、日加の研究をおこなってきた私にとって公私共に職場以上の存在でした。

この８年間で、一番記憶に残っている行事は、２０１９年に日加外交樹立９０周年を記念して行われた高円宮妃殿下の当大学ご訪問です。この機会に、妃殿下に画期的なご講演「根付が日本文化紹介において西洋で果たした役割」を賜りました。

任期中は、研究センターとして多くの研究・教育プロジェクトに関わることができました。様々な学会の共催となり、特にカナダにおける3大日本関連学会（カナダ日本語教育振興会、カナダ日本研究学会、日本ゲーム研究学会）を通じて優秀な日加の研究者に会えたことは大きな喜びです。また、カナダ政府助成金により、ビクトリア大学のジョーダン・スタンガー・ロス教授が率いる日系人に関する国際プロジェクトの一拠点となりました。また、当高円宮基金の設立理念である、日加学生交流の実現のため、２０１６年より日加学術コンソーシアム・学生フォーラムやカナダの日本語弁論大会等に関わり、多くの優秀な学生達に会えたことを強く誇りに思います。

今後も当高円宮センター・基金が高円宮殿下の多大なご貢献を受け継ぎ、コミュニティーを大切にさらに発展して行くことを切に願います。今後とも当センターご支援の程、何卒よろしくお願い申し上げます。
