Holiday Greetings from the Director

It is my pleasure to send you the 15th annual newsletter for the Prince Takamado Japan-Canada Memorial Fund. As the year 2022 comes to an end, I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation for all of you who supported out programs. At the beginning of 2022, H.E. Kawamura Yasuhisa then Ambassador of Japan, offered our students an opportunity to meet virtually. After his departure, I was very honoured to have an opportunity to exchange ideas with the new Japanese Ambassador, H.E. Yamanouchi Kanji, in Calgary. On 29 November, President Bill Flanagan at the University of Alberta welcomed Mr. Watabe Takahiko, the new Consul-General of Japan in Calgary to strengthen our ties with Japan. While the pandemic continued to impact our student mobility programs, in February, we had a very successful online JACAC student forum, titled “Japan-Canada Peace and Security Cooperation in the Asia/Indo-Pacific,” led by Professor Kimie Hara, University of Waterloo and Renison College. In March, for the first time in two years, we were able to host the National Japanese Speech Contest in person. It was such a wonderful occasion in which Japanese language learners once again gathered and strengthened their student network. The wide distribution of COVID-19 vaccines has made it possible for us to live with the pandemic and I was very grateful for this scientific breakthrough. Yet, the world has witnessed several shocking events, including the assassination of Abe Shinzo, former Prime Minister of Japan, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In concluding this year, I cannot hope for anything but a nonviolent and peaceful world. I wish you a great health and happiness in 2023.
高円宮日本カナダ記念基金ニュースレター第１５号をお届けします。年の瀬を迎えるにあたり、２０２２年も皆様には多大なご支援を賜りましたこと、心より御礼申し上げます。本年度も無事に様々な事業を終えることができました。先ず、年の初めには、川村泰久前日本国大使が、当大学の学生達にオンライン上で御講演を行って下さいました。また、カルガリーにて山野内勘二新大使とお目にかかり、当大学と日本の関係強化に関してお話しする機会を賜りました。さらに、去る11月29日には、渡部隆彦新日本国カルガリー総領事が当大学をご訪問になり、ビル・フラナガン学長がお迎えしました。学生交流プログラムへの新型コロナウィルスの影響は継続しておりますが、2月にはウォータール・レニゾン大学の原貴美恵教授の指導のもと、「アジア・インド太平洋地域における安全保障のための日加協力」のテーマで、大変有意義なフォーラムをオンライン上で行うことができました。3月には、２年ぶりにカナダ全国日本語弁論大会を対面式で行うことが叶い、日本語学習者達が実際に集まり、ネットワークを広げることの重要性を再確認することができました。新型コロナウィルスのワクチンの普及により、ウィズ・コロナで活動をすることが可能になり、この科学的発明には感嘆せざるをえません。その一方で、本年度は、安倍晋三元首相の暗殺事件やロシアのウクライナ侵略等、多くの痛ましいニュースもありました。この一年を振り返りながら、非暴力による世界平和実現を切に願いますと共に、２０２３年の皆様のご健康とご多幸をお祈りいたします。
