Event: From The Portapak to The Aniputer: Experimentation and Exchange in Early Japanese Video Art
17 June 2020
In 1972, Canadian artist Michael Goldberg helped to organize Japan’s first video art exhibition. This spirit of transnational cooperation and exchange is the topic of our June 24 online lecture with Jesse Cumming. Informed by research recently conducted through a Japan Foundation fellowship, this presentation outlines the role of collaboration and experimentation in the first two decades of Japanese video art.
About the lecturer: Jesse Cumming is a curator, researcher, and writer based in Toronto, Canada. He has curated, co-curated, and presented programs with MoMA, Anthology Film Archives, The Museìe des Beaux Arts Montreal, Collectif Jeune Cineìma, Art Toronto, Concordia University, The City of Vancouver Archives, and more.
