(Edmonton) Four Physics graduate students recently received University of Alberta Graduate Student Teaching Awards. The awards recognize the work of outstanding graduate teaching assistants in each faculty.
The students are: Ryan Schultz, Saeed Ur Rehman, Chris Polachic and Tania Wood.
Sharon Morsink, the Associate Chair of Graduate studies for the Department of Physics, says teaching is an important part of a graduate student's role.
"First, they are directly affecting the quality of the undergraduate students' educational experience," says Morsink. "Second, teaching helps develop one's communication skills. Communicating scientific results is a very important aspect of doing research, and teaching undergraduate students is a great way to improve. "
She added, "The awards help us let our graduate students know that we think that the quality of their teaching is important. It allows us to honor the students who put in a lot of effort to become better teachers."
