Our Undergraduate Degree Program The Department of Pharmacology offers one of the most comprehensive undergraduate programs in pharmacology currently available in North America. We offer a variety of junior courses covering the basic science of pharmacology and more senior courses in which students can specialize in a variety of topics such as cardiovascular pharmacology, neuropharmacology, endocrine pharmacology (e.g. diabetes), pharmacogenomics, and molecular pharmacology. Importantly, we provide students with the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience by providing a laboratory course and research projects to both our third and fourth-year students. In addition, as of 2023/24 we are providing more flexibility in our Honors program to accommodate students with different levels of research interests, with a research intensive option for those students interested in a career in research (see course planner below). Our degree program incorporates the sciences of chemistry, cell biology, physiology and biochemistry so that upon completion of either a specialization or honors degree in pharmacology, students are well-rounded in many facets of the life sciences. Graduates from our program have gone on to careers in industry, academia and health management. Because our programs focus on therapeutic agents, a BSc in Pharmacology provides an excellent grounding for those students who eventually wish to pursue a career in medicine or pharmacy. Indeed, each year, many graduates from our program gain entrance into these professional programs across the country and here in Alberta. Upon completion of a BSc, many of our students have also continued into graduate school to achieve MSc and PhD designations. Students in our program can also obtain a Certificate in Biomedical Research in addition to their BSc degree. See here for more information. Additional information on pharmacology as a discipline, and our programs, can be found here. Course Planner 2023-2024 for students registering in the program in 2023/24.
