Convocation Spotlight: Meighan Sommer
21 November 2024
Meighan Sommer’s educational journey at the University of Alberta began with a bachelor of science, after which she completed a master of public health in health policy and management. She spent some time working in health policy, and her own personal experiences in the health system — in the neonatal intensive care unit with her firstborn, and caring for a terminally ill family member — also inspired her to return and pursue an after-degree in nursing.
Sommer shares her advice for other students and her moments of pride throughout her degree.
What are you most proud of from your time in the program?
I am proud of balancing family, friends, work and university. I am also extremely proud of the positive impact I made on patients throughout my nursing placements.
How did you stay motivated when things got tough?
My friends and family kept me motivated. Showing my three daughters that I could accomplish and complete an education in a career I’m passionate about was also incredibly important and inspiring to me.
Did you receive any financial awards throughout your studies?
I received a University of Alberta Undergraduate Scholarship and an Edmonton Community Foundation Scholarship.
What will you remember most from your time in the program?
I helped launch a giving platform in Edmonton called Give for Good. I founded this platform and was able to work with United Way to bring it to the community. I am also grateful for the lifelong friendships I made with people going through a similar journey and "just getting it."
What advice would you give to a student thinking of entering this program?
Surround yourself with good, supportive people who encourage you to grow. Take care of yourself and prioritize your health. The journey goes by fast and nothing lasts forever, so stay focused, enjoy the process and keep pushing forward. You've got this!!
What comes next for you?
Next in my career, I hope to continue making a difference in social determinants of health through my work with United Way while balancing a nursing career focused on advancing the health and well-being of mothers, infants and children.
