Marking National Nursing Week

From May 8 - 14, we take time to honour our incredible alumni and our current and future nursing leaders, and we celebrate the deep tradition of research and academic excellence in our Faculty of Nursing.

May 8 - 14, 2023 marks the 30th anniversary of National Nursing Week. The Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta proudly celebrates nursing’s important contributions to the health and well-being of Albertans, Canadians, and beyond.

This year’s theme is Our Nurses. Our Future. Celebrating the many roles that nurses play in a patient’s health-care journey. And we have much to celebrate! 

The Faculty of Nursing has been ranked No. 1 in Canada (for the second year) and No. 5 (up from No. 9 last year) in the world according to the QS World University Rankings! With such an outstanding reputation, we continue to attract the best and brightest to our nursing programs. Our tight-knit community values mentorship and a culture of excellence — in teaching, research and clinical care. Our deeply committed community of educators, researchers and staff are leaders in creating optimal learning environments for our students. Learning opportunities include hands-on practicums, innovative programming and research in a range of topical and critical areas. 

Our continued success stems from our nurse scientist experts working in important areas of research ranging from children’s and women’s health, healthy aging, health equity and health systems. Emerging areas include global health, migration, mental health and Indigenous health. Our work is accessible and impactful; our researchers have a breadth of expertise providing the foundation to support our national and international rankings. 

I am immensely proud to share that the University of Alberta Faculty of Nursing truly is a pioneer in our profession, with over one hundred years’ history of excellence. Over the past century, we have had the support of our outstanding alumni behind us, and our global influence has continued to expand through the deep global relationships and networks developed by our outstanding former and current faculty. 

As we celebrate this week together, I am filled with gratitude—for your hard work, your commitment throughout the past three years of challenges, your hopes for the future and your dedication to our communities. This week, I honour all of you and I thank you for being part of our Faculty of Nursing family.
