24 September 2012

The Department of Music is pleased to announce that Edward Jurkowski has accepted the position of Chair of the Department of Music for a five-year term, commencing July 1, 2013.

Professor Jurkowski earned his BMus in composition at the University of Manitoba and his MA and PhD in music theory at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester. He has spent the last 16 years at the University of Lethbridge, where he attained the rank of professor. Edward served two terms as chair of the Music Department, and has been the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts for the past year.

Dr Jurkowski's research interests include analytical and cultural aspects of the 20th century Nordic symphony, the music of the Estonian composer Eduard Tubin and American composer Morton Feldman, and various facets of music form (in particular, extensions to formal function theory). He has taught classes in chromatic harmony, 20th century analytical techniques, musical form, as well as a wide variety of seminar topics. Edward is a former president of the Canadian University Music Society, and presently serves as the English editor of the society's bilingual journal Intersections.

We look forward to welcoming Professor Jurkowski to the Department and Faculty next year.

Debra Cairns will continue to serve as Interim Chair until December 2012, and David Gramit has agreed to step into this role in January 2013.
