"Reading the Grand Palimpsest of Mixed Reality"

Distinguished Lecturer: Dr. Marco Adria (University of Alberta)

In medieval and ancient times, papyrus and paper were in short supply. Writers would efface an ancient text to make room for the new. The resulting artifact, called a palimpsest, is a manuscript in which layers of the past have been materially preserved. Our screen culture can also be "read" for traces of the past. Mixed reality, for example, combines the virtual and concrete worlds to create a new social environment. It can point to a new age of consumption, as the Palace of Electricity did in Paris, 1900. Or it can offer a "luminous experience," as in Moment Factory's AURA at Notre-Dame Basilica (Montreal 2017). This lecture will propose and respond to the question, "How does mixed reality change and extend the meaning of our social environment?

This event is open to all.
