Who is an Alberta resident?
Awards are only open to residents of Alberta. Where residency is questionable, the awards panel may consider time lived in Alberta, demonstration of connection to Alberta, and stated intent to remain in or return to Alberta. Notwithstanding the above, the awards committee may in exceptional circumstances, in their discretion, grant an award to a non-resident of Alberta.
What schools and programs are eligible?
Awards can be used at any public university, college, or technical institute in Alberta, as well at any private institution or vocational school accredited by Alberta Learning Information Service . Awards may be provided to students attending school outside Alberta (but within Canada) when circumstances warrant (e.g. when a program is not offered in Alberta); applicants should clearly address why they have selected their school of choice. For schools outside Alberta, institutions must be equivalently accredited.
An applicant's program of study must lead to a recognized undergraduate degree, applied degree, diploma, certificate or licence.
A limited number of awards are available to Graduate students in professional programs, including but not limited to Law, Medicine, Speech Pathology, and Physical Therapy. Graduate programs which are primarily academic in nature are not eligible for funding. Second or subsequent degrees are not considered a priority for awards.
Academic upgrading, bridging, or college preparation programs are eligible. Students must indicate how completion of study will help them gain admission to a post-secondary program or lead to future gainful employment.
How will awards be paid?
Awards are intended to assist recipients with mandatory costs such as tuition and fees. For students with severe financial constraints or unique circumstances, awards may be provided to assist with cost related to attending school, such as textbooks. The awards will not provide a living allowance or technology items such as computers, software, upgrades, internet fees or related equipment.
In general, awards for tuition and fees will be paid directly to the institution upon receipt of invoice. Awards to institutions will not be confirmed until conditions are met.
It is the responsibility of the recipients to adhere to all regulations of the accepting post-secondary institution regarding all fee payments and to ensure that registration and/or enrolment status is not jeopardized. In particular, fee deadlines may impact students prior to award confirmation. Students are also responsible for all expenses not covered by the award, in accordance with institution payment deadlines. No part of any award issued by the Edmonton Community Foundation can be applied to amounts owing from previous years.

To apply, students must complete and submit the online application which will be available two months prior to the deadline.

A completed application must include two reference letters/ reference forms , and a copy of the applicant's most recent marks. (for more more details about the required documents see the "Supporting Documents" section in the application)
-
Proof of Métis heritage must be provided before any award is confirmed but does not have to be submitted with the application.
-
Students entering Master or Doctoral programs which are primarily academic in nature are not eligible, although students entering professional programs may apply.

The Blackburns
Lucie and Thornton Blackburn founded the first taxi company in Toronto in the 1830s. Their successful business enterprise was all the more notable in that the Blackburns were also involved in a number of other "firsts". The Blackburns' inspiring story included sparking the first racial uprising in Detroit history and the first serious legal dispute between Canada and the United Sates regarding the Underground Railroad.
In 1831 Lucie and Thornton Blackburn made a daring escape from slave markets in Louisville, Kentucky. They fled north only to be discovered by slave catchers in Michigan, and were destined to be returned to slavery in Kentucky until the local black community in Detroit rallied to their cause sparking the Blackburn Riots of 1833.
Escaping custody, the couple fled to freedom in Canada. In June 1833, Michigan's governor demanded their extradition. An impassioned and successful defence of the Blackburns by Upper Canada's Lieutenant Governor set precedent for future fugitive slave cases in Canada.
The tale of the Blackburns was lost to history until a chance archaeological discovery in a downtown Toronto school yard again brought the story of Lucie and Thornton Blackburn to light. Their story is recorded in "I've Got A Home In Glory Land", a Governor General's Award winning book written by Karolyn Smardz Frost. As noted in the book, Fasken Martineau acted as legal counsel to the Blackburns.

Value of Doctoral Scholarship
The value of the Doctoral Scholarship is up to $56,000 CAD. $24,000 CAD is paid in three instalments of $8,000 CAD in the first year. A doctoral student who has already been awarded a CIGI ILRP doctoral scholarship may apply for renewal in a subsequent year (for a maximum of two additional years) by submitting a summary renewal application. $16,000 CAD is paid per year, in two instalments of $8,000 CAD for years 2 and 3 of the doctoral scholarship. Residence
Doctoral Scholarship students are required to spend a four-month period of residency at the CIGI Campus within year 1 of the scholarship. There is no residency requirement for years 2 and 3 of the scholarship. The residency requirement provides SJD/PhD in Law students an opportunity to pursue their academic research in a think-tank environment where experienced researchers and senior fellows are studying related issues of international law and to participate actively in relevant CIGI and ILRP scholarly and professional activities. During the residency period, all scholarship students will present their research to the ILRP team for feedback and guidance. Each scholarship student is expected to prepare a CIGI opinion piece related to their research for publication by CIGI. The residency element is flexible and can be adapted to complement the particular doctoral program and doctoral student's research needs. A doctoral student may stay longer than four months if space permits and the student's academic supervisor agrees.
During the period of residency each scholarship student will be provided work and study space as well as access to our library and related research resources. Each student must provide their own computer; internet and e-mail access will be provided.

Value: 2 @ $2,500.00 2500
Deadline: 11:59 PM EST on Friday, December 3, 2021 202112021159
Description:
Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP is committed to diversity and inclusion in our policies and in practice. We respect that each individual is unique, and we recognize, welcome and celebrate these individual differences. We aim to ensure that all of us can “bring our full selves” to work and achieve our full potential. We strive to provide an inclusive, supportive and collaborative professional environment that nurtures a collective force of unique talents.
By embracing difference, not only do we offer a better work environment for our people, but we deliver better solutions to our clients. The solutions that emerge from diverse teams and perspectives have proven to be the most creative and innovative.
Osler recognizes that diversity must be actively supported through an array of internal and external initiatives. That’s why we established our Diversity Scholarship Program in 2018. This program will provide up to two $2,500 scholarships each year to law students who, like us, seek to promote diversity and inclusion. We created this scholarship program to ensure that law students are recognized and celebrated for their efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within their law school, their community or the legal profession.
We invite potential applicants to learn about the accomplishments of our most recent scholarship winners.
Eligibility requirements
Any second-year law student* who meets the requirements outlined below is encouraged to apply for consideration. Applicants must:
- Be a full-time second-year law student studying at a Canadian law school; and
- Not be an immediate family member of either an Osler or Carthos Services employee.
Please note that applicants do not have to be members of an equity-seeking group. All students seeking to promote diversity and inclusion are encouraged to apply.
*This includes anyone in their 2nd and 3rd year of the joint JD/MBA 4-year degree; however, individuals in this program can only apply for the scholarship once.
Selection criteria
Osler seeks to recognize two students who exemplify:
- Strong leadership skills; and
- A demonstrated commitment to being a diversity leader within either their law school, the legal profession or the broader non-law community.
We are interested in compelling stories about your diversity leadership experience in either legal or non-legal contexts. Please don’t feel that you need to focus on initiatives undertaken at your law school if you have an even more compelling story to share about diversity and inclusion work you did in the neighbourhood where you grew up, in a previous workplace, for a charity where you volunteer, etc.

Essay question
Freedom Revisited: Which aspects of freedom need to be defended, or recalibrated, to meet the challenges of our time?
Domestically and on the international stage, values of individual, economic, and political freedom are subject to critical inquiry or outright attack. Diverse phenomena such as populism, global power shifts, climate change, the digital revolution, and global migration call for a reflection on the value of freedom for the way we live, do business, and organize politically in the years ahead. While some call for a defence of established freedoms, others call for recalibration of our concept of freedom, or the balance we strike between freedom and other values, such as equality, sustainability, and security. Where do you stand in this debate? Choose one of the following positions as you develop your essay:
In defence of freedom: Choose an area in the realm of business, economics, politics, or civil society where current concepts of freedom are under pressure and where they need to be defended. Describe the problem and offer a concrete and practical proposition of how established concepts of freedom should - and can be - defended. Describe its impact for the future.
In defence of recalibrating freedom: Choose an area in the realms of business, economics, politics or civil society where current concepts of freedom are unsuitable for the challenges we face and where they need to be recalibrated. Describe the problem and offer a concrete and practical proposition of how established concepts of freedom should and can be recalibrated. Describe its impact for the future.
Qualify with an excellent essay
