Shyler Hendrickson in the U of A finals of the 3 Minute Thesis
Margriet Haagsma - 5 March 2025

Shyler Hendrickson, MA student in Ancient Societies and Cultures
Studying under Dr. Frances Pownall, Shyler's research focuses on the Hellenistic period, where he blends different historical and sociological research methodologies in order to study how group identity formed in Hellenistic Cappadocia in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE. He is also the currently serving president of the History, Classics, and Religion Graduate Student Association, and an active member of his campus community and within the department of History Classics, and Religion.
Shyler's 3 Minute Thesis talk is entitled "Hellenism: The Wildflower of History" and discusses how indigenous populations in Anatolia were able to negotiate complex foreign political structures in order to retain a far greater level of autonomy than has been previously assumed.
The finals are scheduled for Friday March 21st 4:30 pm to 7 pm at ECHA 2-190, and we would like to encourage people to show Shyler our support by attending this event. You can register here.
