Upcoming Talk by Mary-Ann Shantz

Join us on Thursday, March 30 at 12:30 pm in Tory 2-58 for "What Nudism Exposes: Rethinking Postwar Canada through the History of the Nudist Movement" by Mary-Ann Shantz.

The nudist movement became firmly established in Canada in the aftermath of the Second World War, fueled by the arrival of European immigrants with nudist experience. While levelling a critique of mainstream attitudes towards nudity, the nudist movement simultaneously sought social approval. Focusing on this dynamic tension, Shantz's talk will reflect on how this unconventional movement offers new perspectives on the postwar period.

Mary-Ann Shantz has a PhD in history from Carleton University. What Nudism Exposes is her first book. She also contributed to the collection, Contesting Bodies and Nation in Canadian History, and has published in Histoire Sociale/Social History and the Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth. Mary-Ann works as a researcher and project manager with Covenant Health.
