Lexicon of Argead Makedonia

The Department of History, Classics, and Religious Studies is delighted to announce the publication of  A Lexicon of Argead Makedonia, co-edited by Waldemar Heckel, Johannes Heinrichs, Sabine Müller, and Frances Pownall (Berlin: Frank & Timme, 2020).

This lexicon is the first to examine the royal house of Ancient Macedonia (the Argead dynasty) from a historical perspective, particularly in order to explain the spectacular political and military success of Philip II and his son Alexander the Great. A team of 44 international scholars have written 247 entries on central features of the history of Argead Macedonia, focusing on the major political actors, the political structures and ruling traditions, royal spaces of action, forms of representation, legitimization and dynastic image, economy and trade, army and war, court and social hierarchies, cult and religion, literature and art, the main sources (literary, epigraphic, archaeological, and numismatic), and selected aspects of reception.The lexicon reflects the current state of the scholarly debate on Argead Macedonia in its complexity and diversity.
