Interprofessional Education
The Health Sciences Education and Research Commons (HSERC) is committed to equipping all University of Alberta health sciences students with health team collaborative practice skills through interprofessional education (IPE).
"Interprofessional education occurs when students from two or more professions learn about, from and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes" - Centre for the Advancement of interprofessional Education (CAIPE) 2002
We partner with health sciences programs to integrate IPE into the curriculum across faculties. We teach the competencies and skills that students need to build and work in interprofessional healthcare teams.
We do this by developing and delivering experiential learning events and courses, including the Interprofessional Learning Pathway Launch, Foundations of Collaborative Practice (INT D 403/503), Help Save Stan, and Launch into Practice. Health Sciences faculties work together to create additional interprofessional learning opportunities for their students; these collaborations go beyond common learning to deliver truly interprofessional experiences within the pre-practice curriculum. Collectively, these experiences form the Interprofessional Learning Pathway.
Our IPE activities provide practice in the four interprofessional competencies of Communication, Collaboration, Role Clarification, and Reflection.
