Project Overview

Moot court competitions give law students practical experience and a deeper understanding of the profession-making them better lawyers. In these rigorous competitions, teams of second- and third- year students prepare and present opposing sides of a legal argument to a panel of three judges.

The University of Alberta moot program prepares advocacy and coaching by a team of peers, faculty and senior lawyers. UAlberta students are also given exclusive access to mentors from the judiciary - up to and including the Supreme Court of Canada.

Bring Out the Best

Each fall, UAlberta law students compete in selection rounds to determine teams for the provincial and national moots. Approximately 50 students are chosen to participate in as many as 15 moot competitions, which take place between February and March.

The competitive aspect of moots brings out the best in students. They get first-hand experience in:

  • Legal research and analysis
  • Preparation, review and revision of written arguments
  • Debating and oral advocacy
  • Teamwork
  • Mentoring with lawyers, judges
  • Networking with competitors, advisors, judges

Moot subjects are as varied as the legal profession itself: labour, health, tax, business, constitutional, criminal and human rights law. Competitions may also involve client counselling, civil suits, labour arbitration and Aboriginal law. Mooting is an exciting, hands-on opportunity for students to develop their lawyering skills. It is also a significant source of prestige for the UAlberta. A successful mooting program demonstrates the high calibre of our students and promotes excellence across the Faculty of Law.
