A Global Crisis, a Community Response

The COVID-19 pandemic is the biggest health crisis the world has faced in more than a century. We are all in this together. Give to the COVID-19 and Emerging Pathogens Research Fund and you support the research that will move us not only towards the development of a vaccine and treatments, but also many other solutions our society needs to respond to the virus.

Give Now

Specifically, your gift can support the following areas:

  • Biomedical and discovery research — to study the molecular and cellular composition of the virus itself, helping to lead to new therapies or devices to improve patient quality of life
  • Clinical research — to improve diagnosis and treatment and to improve patients’ quality of life
  • Health services research — to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of health professionals and health-care systems through changes to practice and policy
  • Social, cultural, environmental and population research — to improve the health of populations in Alberta, Canada and the world through a better understanding of the factors that determine health; to work proactively with vulnerable populations and address inequities exacerbated by COVID-19 and other pandemics

Research is the Answer

The past few months have made it abundantly clear that good medical research is vitally important, especially when it comes to addressing global challenges like COVID-19. With your generous support, we can accelerate that research. Your investment in the COVID-19 and Emerging Pathogens Research Fund will support research to understand COVID-19, to help those impacted by the virus and to prepare us for the next pandemic. Together, we can give millions of Canadians hope for a brighter future. We must respond to this virus on multiple fronts — to improve testing and treatments, find a vaccine and antiviral therapies, support frontline health workers and ensure the public has the best information available. We all have an important part to play in this crisis.

Support World-Leading Expertise

Your gift will directly support the work being done at the University of Alberta, including the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology, which was established in 2010 to prepare for a moment just like this: the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. As one of Canada’s leading academic health science centres, the institute has played a central role in responding to this pandemic — from vaccine and antiviral therapy development to creating better diagnostic tools to detect and screen for the virus. Today, it is a global leader in the discovery of solutions. Your support will help our researchers respond to COVID-19 and learn from this pandemic so we are better prepared for the next one.

More than a Vaccine and Treatments

The search for a vaccine and better treatments is only part of the larger solution to COVID-19. We need collaboration among researchers across the university — in public health, in the social sciences and beyond — to manage the complex tasks of making treatments and a vaccine available and ensuring the public has the right information. Your support will leverage the ongoing collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and the rest of the university — an inclusive approach to health that benefits all areas of society.
