Reminder - Copyright Review of Course Materials - Spring and Summer 2020

All course instructors whose course materials for Spring and Summer 2020 are subject to copyright review (as outlined below) are reminded to submit a Copyright Review Request Form for those readings and related materials for each such course to copyright@ualberta.ca as soon as possible.

Given the recent announcement that courses for Spring and Summer 2020 will be delivered remotely, the selection of course materials and how those course materials are to be distributed to students may be impacted.

Course materials that are within the limits of the University of Alberta Fair Dealing Guidelines and that are made available via the LMS do not require a specific copyright review, although the Copyright Office is pleased to assist with any questions about the interpretation of those guidelines.

In addition, instructors might consider consulting with UA Library staff regarding the online availability of course materials (including e-books), or adopting online course materials that are available free of charge and free of legal re-use restrictions (i.e., open educational resources (OER)).

The use of course materials that require separate licences or permissions for the intended use will require review by the Copyright Office. Please provide as much lead-time as possible when submitting your Copyright Review Request Form (we normally recommend several weeks). There may be the option to have specific course materials that require license fees made available in a custom e-book format via the Bookstore.  This distribution model would allow for these license fees to be recovered from students without requiring the materials to be distributed in print format.

Please note that the following course materials are currently subject to copyright review:

a) all course materials to be distributed in print format that are reproduced from a copyright-protected source publication; and

b) course materials that are to be distributed in electronic format where the intended selection is not within the University of Alberta Fair Dealing Guidelines or where there are other indicators that permission to distribute the selection is required (e.g., e-licence terms which do not allow for the proposed use).
