While Indigenous texts now appear consistently on literature course syllabi, questions remain about how scholars and students are to ethically engage with them. In what ways do the relationships between readers and Indigenous texts reflect-and impact-the broader context of Indigenous/settler relations in Canada? Inspired by the work of the Métis poet Gregory Scofield, and drawing upon the contexts of treaty history and modern land claims, of Inuit intellectual traditions, and of the current Truth & Reconciliation process, this talk explores the possibilities offered by Indigenous literary studies of rethinking not only the way in which we read but also the way in which we live together in this land.
