Congratulations to Pat Demers, Professor in the Department of English and Film Studies, on being awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Royal Society of Canada.
A new commemorative medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to this country. At the same time, it serves to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. During the year of celebrations, 60,000 Canadians are being recognized for significant contributions and achievements. Professor Demers together with five other University of Alberta professors, was awarded the Medal at a reception hosted by University of Alberta President Indira Samarasekera and President of the Royal Society of Canada Yolande Grisé.
Patricia Demers served as Department Chair in the Department of English and Film Studies from 1995 to 1998. She has also served as Vice-President of SSHRC from 1998 to 2002. Professor Demers was also the first woman elected as President of the Royal Society of Canada in 2005.
