English Language Requirements
Since English is the primary language of instruction and communication at the U of A, all applicants must be proficient in English prior to admission. The Faculty of Graduate studies sets guidelines for English language proficiency which are followed by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
One of the following English Language Tests is required (the original document must be sent):
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Total score of 92 (internet-based) with at least 21 on each section or equivalent
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum overall band score of 7.0, with at least 6.0 on each band
- Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): Overall minimum score of 70, with minimum 60 on each subtest
- Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): Overall minimum score of 62 with a minimum band score of 60
- Duolingo: 120 in total with each subscore no less than 100

Scores more than two years old cannot be verified, therefore, the applicant would be required to re-take the test.
GRE is not required nor is it used in the evaluation of the application.
