Dr. Tóth was born in Békés, Hungary in 1933. He is currently Professor Emeritus, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, University of Alberta, and Honorary Professor at the Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary. His specialty is in hydrogeology. Dr. Toth developed the mathematical formula used to explain the movement of gravity-driven groundwater and became the founding father of the basic concept of modern hydrogeology. His work contributes to the unification of the "natural science" and "engineering science" branches of hydrogeology. Through his numerous projects around the world, he has been constantly improving his theory; his research promotes the development of hydrogeology to a broader geo- and environmental science. He is an active member of Hungary's academic life, gaining international recognition with his outstanding scientific achievements. Enhancing hydrogeological education and academic research, as well as improving Hungary's connections with the international scientific community, have formed a significant part of his work.
Congratulations to József Tóth, the first hydrogeologist to be elected to membership in the Hungarian Academy of Science
